Taiwan 2 Essay, Research Paper Taiwan is an island located about 100 stat mis from China. It was originally portion of China. But in 1949, the Communists seized Mainland China coercing the patriots to withdraw to Taiwan. From so on, Taiwan is besides known as Free China. The leaders of Republic of China, ( Free China ) hoped someday that the Communists will be driven out of China. Therefore, they start to construct Taiwan as a military base for such intent. However, their dreams were neer accomplished, alternatively, their attempts turned Taiwan into a economic powerful state. This is besides known as the Taiwan Miracle. There is another interesting information about Taiwan # 8217 ; s name. Despite Free China, Taiwan besides has two other names, # 8220 ; Taiwan # 8221 ; ( the one we call it ) and # 8220 ; Formosa # 8221 ; . We will write a custom essay sample on Taiwan 2 Essay Research Paper Taiwan is or any similar topic specifically for you Do Not WasteYour Time HIRE WRITER Only 13.90 / page Let # 8217 ; s talk about # 8220 ; Taiwan # 8221 ; foremost. # 8220 ; Taiwan # 8221 ; means # 8220 ; terraced bay # 8221 ; to the mountain tribal people who originally lives in Taiwan. When the immigrants from China migrated to this island 3 100s old ages ago, they kept hearing the tribal people naming ( the topographic point where the Chinese landed ) # 8220 ; Taiwan # 8221 ; . Therefore, they assumed that the island is # 8220 ; Taiwan # 8221 ; . Formosa, on the other manus, was called by the Lusitanian crewmans in the 1600s. It means # 8220 ; beautiful island # 8221 ; . Therefore, there are still people mentioning Taiwan as Formosa when they try to fancify Taiwan today. Taiwan is a sub-tropical state that that is warm most of the twelvemonth. The Tropic of Cancer passes through Taiwan in the southern portion. Therefore, snow is unusual to most the Taiwanese here. But there are some topographic points up in the high mountains that do acquire cold adequate to snow. Because the land is hot and humid, it is the best for turning rice and other farm merchandises. The husbandmans in north can turn two harvests of rice a twelvemonth in the North and three harvests a twelvemonth in the South. There are largely mountains in the north portion of Taiwan while home base farming area in the South. The authorities of the Republic of China has some similarities to the authorities of the United States. The authorities is based on a Fundamental law and there is a President and Vice President. ROC has a National Assembly alternatively of a Congress and there are five subdivisions of the authorities, legislative, executive, judicial, scrutiny, and control. There are three major political parties and some other lesser known 1s. The best party that control many resources of the state is the KMT, ( Kuomintang ) , besides known as the Nationalists. The 2nd best party is DPP, ( Democratic Progressive Party ) . And New Party. Well, from here I have to state you that I am a zealot of New Party and I will interprete the three parties in MY WAY. Alright, allow me give you elaborate descriptions of the three parties. KMT is the oldest party in Chinese history. However, over the past 80 old ages, the whole party has turn from energetic and benevolent to decandent. However, such corruptness was non the exclusive job of KMT. The biggest problem this party is confronting is the infiltration of the independency thought. Because of President Lee, who is a entire hypocratical Nipponese renegade, he tries to take KMT into an autocratic that in secret seek the independency of Taiwan. Therefore please note President Lee # 8217 ; s decieteful actions and non to be fooled by the media that support him. Beside KMT, the 2nd most of import political party is the DPP. DPP is a party that is known for seeking of the independency of Taiwan. They think that merely with the entire separation with China would profit Taiwan. They are the ideal extremist collectivists. However, because they are excessively idealistic, these zealots frequently use utmost and violent ways to carry through they ends or to show their feelings. As a consequence, they are besides known for their anti-government and aggressive behaviours. The last party which is besides the party that I personally support, is the N ew Party. New Party is a reasonably # 8220 ; new # 8221 ; party. it was formed, I believe, merely 5 old ages ago by merely 7 members of the KMT legislators. The ground that they form such party is because their ideals to reform the Taiwan authorities. 5 old ages ago, ROC authorities was controled by weak and corrputive KMT functionaries ( so is now ) that the nihilist DPP members disturb the domestic repose. They thought there is a demand to reconstruct the proper societal order and long lost Chinese civilization. Unlike the KMT and DPP, New Party do non believe that # 8220 ; Money # 8221 ; has to travel with # 8220 ; Power # 8221 ; and anything has to travel the # 8220 ; difficult manner # 8221 ; , so they are peaceable combatants against the corruptness and the force in society. At that clip, all the political critics believed that this party will non last under the domination of KMT and DPP. However, over 5 old ages their support has raised from 5 per centums to now 20 pe r centum and is still steadyly turning. As people like me ( good educated in-between category ) support this party, I believe Taiwan will be a better state. Taiwan is a crowded island. Imagin 21 million people populating on an island that # 8217 ; s merely 36,000 square kilometer, including all the mountains and unliveable countries. If you do some serious computations, you would happen out that in some large metropoliss like Taipei, the denseness of population norms over 1500 individuals per square kilometer! Therefore, if you travel on Taiwan, you will normally see people. Sometimes, even if you climb a mountain or hiking far into the forests, you will still happen a small farm small town hidden in the jungle, or pupils on a field day, or soldiers on manoeuvres. There are three major groups that live on the island of Taiwan. The first group is the Chinese that migrated to Taiwan 400 old ages ago to avoid the pandemonium and war in China. These people have their ain idiom ( Chinese ) and imposts. However, although they consider themselves as Chinese, they are still Chinese. The 2nd largest group life in Taiwan is the Mainlanders that came over 40 old ages ago when the Patriots fought the Communists. Because these people are frequently good educated and sometimes affluent ( despite the soldiers that came along ) , they attempts helped to determine the present state. The last group is the natives who have been populating in Taiwan for more than thunsands of old ages. These people are like the Indians in American who face considerable jobs. These three groups were populating in harmony few decennaries ago. However, the DPP has been seeking to stress that the Mainlanders are non truely Chinese but Chinese Pigs. You see, they believe Chinese are N OT Chinese ( this most frustrates me! ) . They declare that one time Taiwan is independent they will kick all the Chinese Pigs out. The job is that there are people like me who is half Chinese and half Chinese Pig # 8230 ; Taiwanese are friendly and nice people. Most people who do non cognize about Chinese may believe that they are merely like those hapless 3rd universe state people who have low instruction rate, and abuse the natural environment. Well, I am here to turn out that Chinese are really sort and considerate. If you of all time come to Taiwan, you will happen that Chinese provides the aliens with excess aid and attention. If you go to a food market shop without cognizing even a Chinese word, you will happen that the Chinese in the shop, even the other clients will all be your assistance to happen the things you want to purchase. Sometimes you will even acquire a price reduction. That # 8217 ; s why there are more westerners coming to Taiwan for occupations now, or for holiday. Besides, there are far less mental unwellness, alcohol addiction, societal perturbations, and violent offenses in Taiwan comparison to elsewhere. Religions in Taiwan Most Chinese on Taiwan are Buddhists. Buddhist temples, shrines, and statues are found all over Taiwan ; in Changhua, there is a 72-foot high statue of Buddha, and in Taichung there is an even taller statue of Milwofwo, the Happy Buddha. The oldest and best-known BUddhist temple in Taipei is Lungshan Temple, which is about 250 old ages old. # 8220 ; Lung-Shan # 8221 ; means Dragon Hill ; the temple is ever busy with believers and toursists. Chinese normally do non travel to a group service, but instead travel to the temple separately when they have a desire to make so. In Chinese temples, you will see statues and figurines of other Gods, goddesses and saints, and you will be impressed bye the luxuriant roof carvings of animate beings and human figures. You will see incense being burned and paper money and nutrient offerings being made for the Gods. In add-on to Buddhism, Confucianism and Taoism are besides of import doctrines of Taiwan. Chinese are really tolerant about faith, and they see no trouble in sing themselves to be Buddhist, Confucianist, Taoist, and even Christian, all at the same clip! Other Chinese Don # 8217 ; t concern themselves excessively much with any faith. By and large, it is of import for Chinese to pay regard to older people. Children must esteem parents ; married womans must esteem hubbies ; brothers and sisters must esteem each other. This pattern is called filial piousness, and is portion of the doctrine of Confucius, plus a blend of Buddhism, Taoism, and five thousand old ages of Chinese idea. Weddings Weddings in Taiwan are progressively similar to those in western states. Chinese brides now wear the same sort of marrying gown as the Americans, but the traditional colour of red is still really evident at Chinese nuptialss. Many Chinese delay until they are about 30 old ages old before acquiring married. The adult male frequently will prorogue matrimony until they have completed their schooling, their military service, and are more certain of holding a unafraid occupation. Funerals Funerals in Taiwan may look odd to the westerners. For on thing, white, non black, is the colour that is frequently seen at funerals. Besides, some Chinese perfere to ask for a batch of people to come to the funeral, so the household might sometimes pay people to go to even though they do non cognize the adult male who died. Fortunately, these instances occur less than earlier. Part of the funeral ceremonial includes the combustion of paper money and otherpaper objects, in the belief that the fume will transport the existent object up to heaven for the dead individual to utilize. Families normally burn immense paper house, paper mercedes, paper retainers, paper contraptions for their loved 1s.

Also, it will affect the judgment of your teachers and peers. In fact, some of the best topics available today are those that revolve around the founding date of a particular country. Some of the well-known topics include America's own Declaration of Independence, the US Constitution, the Articles of Confederation, the War of 1812, and the US Constitution of 1787.You can also look at the political issues that were facing the United States during this time period. Many Americans were dying from tuberculosis and other such things, but there was still a large population of people living in the country. The internet is full of resources that you can use when selecting a topic to write about.Writing a chronological order essay is not really as easy as it may sound. Some people choose to write a history essay as their final paper, while others choose to just give a few brief facts about a particular culture. Most students, however, tend to write a topic based on their particular interests. They may focus on things that they find interesting or that they think are pertinent to the topic at hand. Some students are very eager to delve into the current political situation in the United States. For this reason, they tend to highlight c ertain ideas that are important to society, such as cultural differences between groups or social justice. Bad College Essays 10 Mistakes You Must Avoid
Bad College Essays 10 Mistakes You Must Avoid SAT / ACT Prep Online Guides and Tips Just as there are noteworthy examples ofexcellent college essaysthat admissions offices like to publish, so are there cringe-worthy examples ofterrible college essays that end up being described by anonymous admissions officers on Reddit discussion boards. While I wonââ¬â¢t guarantee that your essay will end up in the first category, I will say that you follow my advice in this article, your essay most assuredly wonââ¬â¢t end up in the second. How do you avoid writing a bad admissions essay? Read on to find out what makes an essay bad and to learn which college essay topics to avoid. I'll also explain how to recognize bad college essays ââ¬â and what to do toif you end up creating one by accident. What Makes Bad College Essays Bad What exactly happens to turn a college essay terrible? Just as great personal statements combine an unexpected topic with superb execution, flawed personal statements compound problematic subject matterwith poor execution. Problems With the Topic The primary way to screw up a college essay is to flubwhat the essay is about or how youââ¬â¢ve decided to discuss a particular experience. Badly chosen essay content can easily createan essay that is off-putting in one of a number of ways Iââ¬â¢ll discuss in the next section. The essay is the place to let the admissions office of your target college get to know your personality, character, and the talents and skills that arenââ¬â¢t on your transcript. So if you start witha terrible topic, not only will you end up with a bad essay, but you risk ruining the good impression that the rest of your application makes. Some bad topics show admissions officers that you donââ¬â¢t have a good sense of judgment or maturity, which is a problem since they are building a class of college students who have tobe able to handle independent life on campus. Other bad topics suggest that you are a boring person, or someone who doesnââ¬â¢t process your experience in a colorful or lively way, which is a problem since collegeswant to create a dynamic and engaged cohort of students. Still other bad topics indicate that you'reunaware of or disconnected from the outside world and focused only on yourself, which is a problem since part of the point of college is to engage with new people and new ideas, and admissions officersare looking for people who can do that. Problems With the Execution Sometimes, even if the experiences you discuss could be the foundation of a great personal statement, the way youââ¬â¢ve structured and put together your essay sends up warning flags. This is because the admissions essay is also a place to show the admissions team the maturity and clarity of your writing style. One way to get this part wrong is to exhibit very faulty writing mechanics, like unclear syntax or incorrectly used punctuation. This is a problem since college-ready writing is one of the things thatââ¬â¢s expected from a high school graduate. Another way to mess this up is to ignore prompt instructions either for creative or careless reasons. This can show admissions officers that you'reeither someone who simply blows off directions and instructions or someone who can't understand how to follow them. Neither is a good thing, since they are looking for people who are open to receiving new information from professors and not just deciding they know everything already. Ignoring directions to this degree is not creative, just annoying. College Essay Topics To Avoid Want to know why you're often advised to write about something mundane and everyday for your college essay? That's because the more out-there your topic, the more likely it is to stumble into one of these trouble categories. Too Personal The problem with the overly personal essay topic is that revealing something veryprivate can show that you donââ¬â¢t really understand boundaries. And knowing where appropriate boundaries arewill be key for living on your own with a bunch of people not related to you. Unfortunately, stumbling into the TMI zone of essay topics is more common than you think. One quick test for checking your privacy-breaking level:if itââ¬â¢s not something youââ¬â¢d tell a friendlystranger sitting next to you on the plane, maybe donââ¬â¢t tell it to the admissions office. Examples: Describinglosing your virginity, or anything about your sex life really. This doesnââ¬â¢t mean you canââ¬â¢t write about your sexual orientation ââ¬â just leave out the actual physical act. Writing in too much detail about your illness, disability, any other bodily functions. Detailed meaningful discussion of what this physical condition has meant to you and your life is a great thing to write about. But stay away from body horror and graphic descriptions that are simply there for gratuitous shock value. Waxing poetic about your love for your significant other.Your relationshipis adorable to the people currently involved in it, but those who don't know you aren't invested in this aspect of your life. Confessing to odd and unusual desires of the sexual or illegal variety.Your obsession with cultivating cacti is wonderful topic, while your obsession with researching explosives is a terrible one. Some secrets are better behind lock and key. Or behind industrial strengthrack and pinion matching machined gears and pressure bolt. Too Revealing of Bad Judgment Generally speaking, leave past illegal or immoralactions out of your essay. It's simply a bad idea to give admissions officers ammunition to dislike you. Some exceptions might be if you did something in a very, very different mindset from the one youââ¬â¢re in now (in the midst of escaping from danger, under severe coercion, or when you were very young, for example). Or if your essay is about explaining how you'veturned over a new leaf and you have the transcript to back you up. Examples: Writing about committing crime as something fun or exciting. Unlessit's on your permanent record, and you'd like a chance to explain how you've learned your lesson and changed, don't put this in your essay. Describingdrug use or the experience of being drunk or high. Even if you're in a state where some recreational drugs are legal, you're a high school student. Your only exposure to mind-altering substances should be caffeine. Making upfictional stories about yourself as though they are true. You're unlikely to be a good enough fantasist to pull this off, and there's no reason to roll the dice on being discovered to be a liar. Detailing yourpersonality flaws. Unless you have a great story of coping with one of these, leave deal-breakers like pathological narcissism out of your personal statement. You're better off not airing your dirty laundry out in public. Seriously, no one wants to smell those socks. Too Overconfident While it's great to have faith in your abilities, no one likes a relentless show-off. No matter how magnificent your accomplishments, if you decide to focus your essay on them, it's better to describe a setback or a moment of doubt rather that simply praising yourself to the skies. Examples: Bragging and making yourself the flawless hero of your essay. This goes double if you're writing about not particularly exciting achievements like scoring the winning goal or getting the lead in the play. Having no awareness of the actual scope ofyour accomplishments. It's lovelythat you take time to help others, but volunteer-tutoring a couple of hours a week doesnââ¬â¢t make you a saintly figure. Cheering on a team? Awesome. Cheering on yourself? A little obnoxious. Too Clichà ©d or Boring Remember your reader. In this case, you're tryingto make yourself memorable to anadmissions officer who has been reading thousands of other essays. If your essay makes the mistake of being boring or trite, it just wonââ¬â¢t register in that personââ¬â¢s mind as anything worth paying attention to. Examples: Transcribingyour resume into sentence form or writing about the main activity on your transcript. The application already includes your resume, or a detailed list of your various activities. Unless the prompt specifically asks youto write about your main activity, the essay needs to be about afacet of your interests and personality that doesn't come through the other parts of the application. Writing about sports. Every athlete tries to write this essay. Unless you have a completely off-the-wall story or unusual achievement, leave this overdone topic be. Beingmoved by your community service trip to a third-world country. Were you were impressed athow happy the people seemed despite being poor? Did you learn a valuable lesson about how privileged you are? Unfortunately, so has every other teenager who traveled on one of these trips. Writing about thistends to simultaneously make you sound unempathetic, clueless about the world, way over-privileged, and condescending. Unless you have a highly specific, totally unusual story to tell, donââ¬â¢t do it. Reacting with sadness to a sad, but very commonexperience. Unfortunately, many of the hard, formative events in your life are fairly universal. So, if youââ¬â¢re going to write about death or divorce, make sure tofocus on how youdealt with this event, so the essay is something only you could possibly have written. Only detailed, idiosyncratic description can save this topic. Going meta.Donââ¬â¢t write about the fact that youââ¬â¢re writing the essay as we speak, and now the reader is reading it, and look, the essay is right here in the reader'shand. It's a technique that seems clever, but has already been done many times in many different ways. Offering your ideas on how tofix the world. This is especially true if your solution is an easy fix, if only everyone would just listen to you. Trust me,there's just no way you are being realisticallyappreciative of the level of complexity inherent in the problem you're describing. Starting with a famous quotation. There usually is no need to shore up your own words by bringing in someone else's. Of course, if you are writing about a particular phrase that you've adopted as a life motto, feel free to include it. But even then, having it be the first line in your essay feels like you're handing the keys over to that author and asking them to drive. Using an everyday object as a metaphor for your life/personality.ââ¬Å"Shoes. They are like this, and like that, and people love them for all of these reasons. And guess what? They are just like me.â⬠Shoes are from several centuries ago and tend to be used as flower vases. And that's true for me too! Too Off-Topic Unlike the essays youââ¬â¢ve been writing in school where the idea is to analyze something outside of yourself, the main subject of your college essay should be you, your background, your makeup, and your future.Writing about someone or something else might well make a great essay, but not for this context. Examples: Paying tribute to someone very important to you. Everyone would love to meet your grandma, but this isnââ¬â¢t the time to focus on her amazing coming of age story. If you do want to talk about a person who is important to your life, dwell on the waysyou've been impacted by them, and how you will incorporate this impact into your future. Documentinghow well other people do things, say things, are active, while you remain passive and inactive in the essay. Being in the orbit of someone else's important lab work, or complex stage production, or meaningful political activism is a fantasticlearning moment. But if you decide to write about, your essay should be about your learning and how you've been influenced, not about the other person's achievements. Concentrating ona work of art that deeply moved you. Watch out for the pitfall of writing ananalytical essay about that work, and not at all about your reaction to it or how youââ¬â¢ve been affected since. Check out our explanation of how to answer Topic D of the ApplyTexasapplicationto get some advice on writing about someone else's workwhile making sure your essay still points back at you. If you write your essay about art, be theguy all the way on the right, looking right at the audience to explain what's happening. Don't be the guy who is totally absorbed bywhat he's looking at. Remember, no reader wants to be lectured at. If thatââ¬â¢s what your essay does, you are demonstrating an inabilityto communicate successfully with others. Also, remember that no college is eager to admit someone who is too close-minded to benefit from being taught by others. A long, one-sided essay about a hot-button issue will suggest that you are exactly that. Examples: Ranting at length about political, religious, or other contentious topics. You simply don't know where the admissions officer who reads your essay standson any of these issues. It's better to avoid upsetting or angering that person. Writing aone-sided diatribe about guns, abortion, the death penalty, immigration, or anything else in the news. Even if you can marshal facts in your argument, this essay is simply the wrong place to take a narrow, unempathetic side in an ongoing debate. Mentioninganything negative about the school youââ¬â¢re applying to. Again, your reader is someone who works there and presumably is proud of the place. This is not the time to question the admissions officer's opinions or life choices. Don't make your reader feel like they've suddenly gotten in the ring with you. College Essay Execution Problems To Avoid Bad college essays aren't only caused by bad topics. Sometimes, even if youââ¬â¢re writing about an interesting, relevant topic, you can still seem immature or unready for college life because of the way you present that topic ââ¬â the way you actually write your personal statement. Check to make sure you haven't made any of the common mistakes on this list. Tone-Deafness Admissions officers are looking for resourcefulness, the ability to be resilient, and an active and optimistic approach to life ââ¬â these are all qualities that create a thriving college student. Essays that don't show these qualities are usually suffering from tone-deafness. Examples: Being whiny or complaining about problems in your life. Is the essay about everyone doing things to/against you? About things happening to you, rather than you doing anything about them? That perspective is a definite turn-off. Trying and failing to use humor. You may be very funny in real life, but it's hard to be successfully funny in this context, especially when writing for a reader who doesnââ¬â¢t know you. If you do want to use humor, I'd recommendthe simplest and most straightforward version:being self-deprecating and low-key. Talking down to the reader, or alternately being self-aggrandizing. No one enjoys being condescended to. In this case, much of the function of your essay is to charm and make yourself likable, which is unlikely to happen if you adopt this tone. Being pessimistic, cynical, and generally depressive. You are applying to college because you are looking forward to a future of learning, achievement, and self-actualization. This is not the time to bust out your existential ennui and your jaded, been-there-done-that attitude toward life. Edvard Munch probably didn't submit "The Scream" as his admissions essay. He smartly saved all that existential angst for his post-bac! (Image: Eduard Munch [Public Domain], via Wikimedia Commons) Lack of Personality One good question to ask yourself is: could anyone else have written this essay? If the answer is yes, then you arenââ¬â¢t doing a good job of representing your unique perspective on the world. Itââ¬â¢s very important to demonstrate your ability to be a detailed observer of the world, since that will be one of your main jobs as a college student. Examples: Avoiding any emotions, and appearing robot-like and cold in the essay. Unlike essays that you've been writing for class, this essay is meant to be a showcase of your authorial voice and personality. It may seem strange to shift gears after learning how to take yourself out of your writing, but this is the place where you have to put as much as yourself in as possible. Skipping overdescription and specific detailsin favor ofwriting only in vague generalities. Does yournarrative feel like a newspaper horoscope, whichcould apply to every other person who was there that day? Then youââ¬â¢re doing it wrong and need to refocus onyourreaction, feelings, understanding, and transformation. Your college essay isn't the place to be indistinguishable. Off-Kilter Style Thereââ¬â¢s some room for creativity here, yes, but a college essay isnââ¬â¢t a free-for-all postmodern art class. True, there areprompts that specifically call for your most out-of-left-field submission, or allow you to submit a portfolio or some other work sample instead of a traditional essay. But on a standard application, it's better to stick to traditional prose, split into paragraphs, further split into sentences. Examples: Submitting anything other than just the materials asked for on your application. Don't send food to the admissions office, don't write your essay on clothing or shoes, don't create a YouTube channel about your undying commitment to the school. I know there are a lot ofurban legends about "that one time this crazy thing worked," but they are either not true or about something that will not work a second time. Writing your essay in verse, in the form of a play, in bullet points, as an acrostic, or any other non-prose form.Unless you really have a way with poetry or playwriting, and you are very confident that you can meet the demands of the prompt and explain yourself well in this form, don't discard prose simply for the sake of being different. Using as many ââ¬Å"fancyâ⬠words as possible and getting very faraway from sounding like yourself. Admissions officers are unanimous in wanting to hearyournot fully formed teenage voice in your essay. This means that you should write at the top of your vocabulary range and syntax complexity, but don't trade every word up for a thesaurus synonym. Your essay will suffer for it. If you dress like this every day, you can use all the fancy words you like. Failure to Proofread Most people have a hard time checking overtheir own work. This is why you have tomake sure that someone else proofreads your writing. This is the one place where you can, should ââ¬â and really must ââ¬â get someone who knows all about grammar, punctuation and has a good eye for detail to take a red pencil to your final draft. Otherwise, you look likeyou either donââ¬â¢t know the basic rules or writing (in which case, are you really ready for college work?) or donââ¬â¢t care enough to present yourself well (in which case, why would the admissions people care about admitting you?). Examples: Typos, grammatical mistakes, punctuation flubs, weird font/paragraph spacing issues. It's true that these are often unintentional mistakes. But caring about getting it right is a way to demonstrate your work ethic and dedication to the task at hand. Going over the word limit. Part of showing your brilliance is being able to work within arbitrary rules and limitations. Going over the word count points to a lack of self-control, which is not a very attractive feature in a college applicant. Repeating the same word(s) or sentence structure over and over again. This makes your prose monotonous and hard to read. Repetition: excellent for mastering the long jump, terrible for keeping a reader's interest. Bad College Essay Examples ââ¬â And How to Fix Them The beauty of writing is that you get to rewrite. So ifyou think of your essay as a draft waiting to be revised into a better version rather than as a precious jewel that canââ¬â¢t bear being touched, youââ¬â¢ll be in far better shape to correct the issues that always crop up! Nowletââ¬â¢s take a look at some actual college essay drafts to see where the writer is going wrong and how the issue could be fixed. Essay #1: The ââ¬Å"I Am Writing This Essay as We Speakâ⬠Meta-Narrative Was your childhood home destroyed by a landspout tornado? Yeah, neither was mine. I know that intro might have given the impression that this college essay will be about withstanding disasters, but the truth is that it isn't about that at all. In my junior year, I always had in mind an image of myself finishingthe college essay months before the deadline. But as the weeks dragged on and the deadline drew near, it soon became clear that at the rate things are going I would probably have to make new plans formy October, November and December. Falling into my personal wormhole, I sat down with my momto talk about colleges. ââ¬Å"Maybe you should write about Star Trek,â⬠she suggested, ââ¬Å"you know how youââ¬â¢ve always been obsessed with Captain Picard, calling him your dream mentor. Unique hobbies make good topics, right? You'll soundcreative!â⬠I played with the thought in my mind, tapping my imaginary communicator pin and whispering "Computer. Tea. Earl Grey. Hot. And then an Essay." Nothing happened. Instead, I sat quietly in my room wrote the old-fashioned way. Days later I emerged from my room disheveled, but to my dismay, this college essay made me sound like justa guy who can't getover the fact that he'll never take the Starfleet Academy entrance exam. So, I tossedmy essay away without even getting to disintegrate it with a phaser set on stun. I fell into astate of panic. My college essay. My image of myself in senioryear. Almost out of nowhere, Robert Jameson Smith offered his words of advice. Perfect! He suggested students begin their college essay by listing their achievements and letting their essay materialize from there. My heart lifted, I took his advice and listed three of my greatest achievements - mastering my backgammon strategy, being a part of TREE in my sophomoreyear, and performing"I Am the Very Model of a Modern Major-General" from The Pirates of Penzance in public. And sure enough, I felt inspiration hit me and began to type away furiously into the keyboard about my experience in TREE, or Trees Require Engaged Environmentalists. I reflected on the current state of deforestation, and described the dichotomy of it being both understandable why farmers cut down forests for farmland, and how dangerous this is to our planet. Finally, I added my personal epiphany to the end of my college essay as thecherry on the vanilla sundae, as the overused saying goes. After 3 weeksof figuring myself out, I have convertedmyself into a piece of writing. As far as achievements go, this was definitely an amazing one. The ability to transforma human being into 603words surely deservesa gold medal. Yet in this essay, I was still being nagged by a voice that couldn't be ignored. Eventually, I submitted to that yelling inner voiceand decided that this was not the right essay either. In the middle of a hike through Philadelphia's Fairmount Park, I realized that the college essay was nothing more than an embodiment of my character. The two essays I have written were not right because they have failed to become more than just words on recycled paper. The subject failed to come alive. Certainly my keen interest in Star Trekand my enthusiasm forTREE are a great part of who I am, but there were other qualities essential in my character that did not come across in the essays. With this realization, I turned around as quickly as I could without crashing into a tree. What Essay #1 Does Well Here are all things that are working on all cylinders for this personal statement as is. Killer First Sentence Was your childhood home destroyed by a landspout tornado? Yeah, neither was mine. Funny, striking, memorable ââ¬â this sentence has it all: A strange fact. There are different kinds of tornadoes? What is a "landspout tornado" anyway? A late-night-deep-thoughts hypothetical. What would it be like to be a kid whose house was destroyed in this unusual way? Direct engagement with the reader.Instead of asking ââ¬Å"what would it be like to have a tornado destroy a houseâ⬠it asks ââ¬Å"wasyour house ever destroyed." Speaking of tornadoes, how awesome was the Wizard of Oz? Gentle, Self-Deprecating Humor That Lands Well I played with the thought in my mind, tapping my imaginary communicator pin and whispering "Computer. Tea. Earl Grey. Hot. And then an Essay." Nothing happened. Instead, I sat quietly in my room wrote the old-fashioned way. Days later I emerged from my room disheveled, but to my dismay, this college essay made me sound like just a guy who can't get over the fact that he'll never take the Starfleet Academy entrance exam. So, I tossed my essay away without even getting to disintegrate it with a phaser set on stun. The author has hiscake and eats it too here: both making fun of himself for being super into the Star Trekmythos, but also showing himself being committed enough to try whispering a command to the Enterprise computeralone in hisroom. You know, just in case. A Solid Point That Is Made Paragraph by Paragraph The meat of the essay is that the two versions of himself that the author thought about portraying each fails in some way to describe the real him. Neither an essay focusing on his off-beat interests, nor an essay devoted to his serious activismcouldcapture everything about a well-rounded person in 600 words. Great Exit With this realization, I turned around as quickly as I could without crashing into a tree. The essay illustrates its own stopping by having the narrator literally stop in the middle of a hike and narrowly avoid a collision. Thatââ¬â¢s funny and clever without being too gimmicky. The ending should be short and sweet, so your reader doesn't start wishing you'd turn into a human cannonball. (Image: fir0002via Wikimedia Commons.) Where Essay #1 Needs Revision Rewriting these flawed parts will make the essay shine. Spending Way Too Long on the Metanarrative I know that intro might have given the impression that this college essay will be about withstanding disasters, but the truth is that it isn't about that at all. In my junior year, I always had in mind an image of myself finishingthe college essay months before the deadline. But as the weeks dragged on and the deadline drew near, it soon became clear that at the rate things are going I would probably have to make new plans formy October, November and December. After 3 weeksof figuring myself out, I have convertedmyself into a piece of writing. As far as achievements go, this was definitely an amazing one. The ability to transforma human being into 603words surely deservesa gold medal. Look at how long and draggy these paragraphs are, especially after that zippy opening. Is it at all interesting to read about how someone else found the process of writing hard? Not really, because this is a very common experience. In the rewrite, Iââ¬â¢d advise condensing all of this to maybe a sentence to get tothe meat of the actual essay. Letting Other People Do All the Doing I sat down with my momto talk about colleges. ââ¬Å"Maybe you should write about Star Trek,â⬠she suggested, ââ¬Å"you know how youââ¬â¢ve always been obsessed with Captain Picard, calling him your dream mentor. Unique hobbies make good topics, right? You'll soundcreative!â⬠Almost out of nowhere, Robert Jameson Smith offered his words of advice. Perfect! He suggested students begin their college essay by listing their achievements and letting their essay materialize from there. Twice in the essay, the author lets someone else tell him what to do.Not only that, but it sounds like both of the ââ¬Å"incompleteâ⬠essays were dictated by the thoughts of other people and had little to do with his own ideas, experiences, or initiative. In the rewrite, it would be better to recast both the Stark Trekand the TREE versions of the essay as the authorââ¬â¢s own thoughts rather than someone elseââ¬â¢s suggestions. This way, the point of the essay ââ¬â taking apart the idea that a college essay couldsummarize life experience ââ¬â is earned by the authorââ¬â¢s two failed attempts to write that other kind of essay. Don't be a passive panda. Be an active antelope. Leaving the Insight and Meaning Out of His Experiences Both the Star Trekfandom and the TREE activism were obviously important life experiences for this author ââ¬â important enough to be potential college essay topic candidates. But there is no description of what the author did with either one, nor any explanation of why these were so meaningful to his life. Itââ¬â¢s fine to say that none of your achievements individually define you, but in order for that to work, you have to really sell the achievements themselves. In the rewrite, it would be good to explore what he learned about himself and the world by pursuing these interests. How did they change him or seen him into the person he is today? Not Adding New Shades and Facets of Himself Into the Mix So, I tossedmy essay away without even getting to disintegrate it with a phaser set on stun. Yet in this essay, I was still being nagged by a voice that couldn't be ignored. Eventually, I submitted to that yelling inner voiceand decided that this was not the right essay either. In both of these passages, there is the perfect opportunity to point out what exactly these failed versions of the essay didn'tcapture about the author. In the next essay draft, I would suggest subtly making a point about his other qualities. For example, after the Star Trekparagraph, he could talk about other culture he likes to consume, especially if he can discussart forms he is interested in that would not be expected from someone who lovesStar Trek. Or, after the TREE paragraph, the author could explain why this second essay was no better at capturing him than the first. What was missing? Why is the self in the essay shouting ââ¬â is it because this version paints him as an overly aggressive activist? Star Trek fans are a dime a dozen. But a Trekkie who is also a graffiti aficionado? Now that's a novel intersection of cultural tastes. Want to build the best possible college application? We can help. PrepScholar Admissions is the world's best admissions consulting service. Essay #2: The ââ¬Å"I Once Saw Poor Peopleâ⬠Service Trip Essay Unlike other teenagers, Iââ¬â¢m not concerned about money, or partying, or what others think of me. Unlike other eighteenyear-olds, I think about my future, and haven't become totally materialistic and acquisitive. My whole outlook on lifechanged after I realized that my life was just being handed to me on a silver spoon, and yet there were those in the world who didnââ¬â¢t have enough food to eat or place to live. I realized that the one thing that this world needed more than anything was compassion; compassion for those less fortunate than us. During the summer of 2006, I went on a community servicetrip to rural Peru to help build an elementary school for kids there. I expected harsh conditions, but what I encountered was far worse. It was one thing to watch commercials asking for donations to helpthe unfortunate people in less developed countries, yet it was a whole different story to actually live it. Even after all this time, I can still hear babies cryingfrom hunger; I can still see the filthy rags that they wore; I can still smell the stench of misery and hopelessness. But my most vivid memory was the moment I first got tothe farming town. The conditions of it hit me by surprise; it looked much worse in real life than compared to the what our group leader had told us. Poverty to me and everyone else I knew was a foreign concept that people hear about on the news or see in documentaries. But this abject poverty was their life, their reality. And for the brief ten daysI was there, it would be mine too. As all of this re alization came at once, I felt overwhelmed by the weight of what was to come. Would I be able to live in the same conditions as these people? Would I catch adisease that no longer existed in the first world, or maybe die from drinking contaminated water? As these questions rolled around my already dazed mind, I heard a soft voice askingme in Spanish, ââ¬Å"Are you okay? Is there anything I can do to make you feel better?â⬠I looked down to see a small boy, around nineyears of age, who looked starved, and cold, wearing tattered clothing, comforting me. These people who have so little were able to forget their own needs, and put those much more fortunate aheadof themselves. It was at that moment that I saw how selfish I had been. How many people suffered like this in the world, while I went about life concerned about nothing at all? Thinking back on the trip, maybe I made a difference, maybe not. But I gained something much more important. I gained the desire to make the world a better place for others. It was in a small, poverty-stricken village in Peru that I finally realized that there was more to life than just being alive. What Essay #2Does Well Let's first point out what this draft has going for it. Clear Chronology This is an essay that tries to explain a shift in perspective. There are different ways to structure this overarching idea, but a chronological approach that starts with an earlier opinion, describes a mind changing event, and ends with the transformed point of view is an easy and clear way to lay this potentially complex subject out. Arranging your narrative in order of what happened when is a simple and surefire strategy. (Image: User:Lite via Wikimedia Commons) Where Essay #2Needs Revision Now let's see what needs to be changed in order for this essay to pass muster. Condescending, Obnoxious Tone Unlike other teenagers, Iââ¬â¢m not concerned about money, or partying, or what others think of me. Unlike other eighteenyear-olds, I think about my future, and haven't become totally materialistic and acquisitive. This is a very broad generalization, which doesnââ¬â¢t tend to be the best way to formulate an argument ââ¬â or to start an essay. It just makes this author sound dismissive of a huge swath of the population. In the rewrite, this author would be way better off just concentrate on what she want to say about herself, not pass judgment on ââ¬Å"other teenagers,â⬠most of whom she doesnââ¬â¢t know and will never meet. I realized that the one thing that this world needed more than anything was compassion; compassion for those less fortunate than us. Coming from someonewho hasnââ¬â¢t earned her place in the world through anything but the luck of being born, the word ââ¬Å"compassionâ⬠sounds really condescending. Calling others "less fortunate" when you're a senior in high school has a dehumanizing quality to it. These people who have so little were able to forget their own needs, and put those much more fortunate in front of themselves. Again, this comes across as very patronizing. Not only that, but to this little boythe author was clearly not looking all that ââ¬Å"fortunateâ⬠ââ¬â instead, she looked pathetic enough to need comforting. Inthe nextdraft, a better hook could be making the essayabout the many different kinds of shifting perspectives the author encountered on that trip. A more meaningful essay would compare and contrastthe points of view of the TV commercials, to what the group leader said, to the author's own expectations, and finally to this childââ¬â¢s point of view. It may help to imagine you have the compound eyes of an insect. How many different perspectives can you see and describe? Vague, Unobservant Description During the summer of 2006, I went on a community servicetrip to rural Peru to help build an elementary school for kids there. Phrases likeââ¬Å"cries of the small children from not having enough to eatâ⬠and ââ¬Å"dirt stained ragsâ⬠seem likedescriptions, but they're really closer to incurious and completely hackneyedgeneralizations. Why were the kids were crying? How many kids? All the kids? One specific really loud kid? The same goes forââ¬Å"filthy rags,â⬠which is both an incredibly insensitive way to talk about the clothing of these villagers, and again shows a total lack of interest in their life. Why were their clothes dirty? Were they workers or farmerssotheir clothes showing marks of labor? Did they have Sunday clothes? Traditional clothes they would put on for special occasions? Did they make their own clothes? That would be a good reason to keep wearing clothing even if it had ââ¬Å"stainsâ⬠on it. The rewrite should either make this section more specific and less reliant on cliches, or should discard it altogether. The conditions of it hit me by surprise; it looked much worse in real life than compared to the what our group leader had told us. Poverty to me and everyone else I knew was a foreign concept that people hear about on the news or see in documentaries. But this abject poverty was their life, their reality. If this is the ââ¬Å"most vivid memory,â⬠then I would expect to read all the details that havebeen seared into the author'sbrain. What did their leader tell them? What was different in real life? What was the light like? What did the houses/roads/grass/fields/trees/animals/cars look like? What time of day was it? Did theyget there by bus, train, or plane? Was there an airport/train station/bus terminal? A city center? Shops? A marketplace? There are any number of details to include here when doing another drafting pass. Reading vague generalizations is like trying to make sense of this blurry picture. Is it flowers? Holiday lights? Confetti? Who knows. And after a while, who cares? Lack of Insight or Maturity But this abject poverty was their life, their reality. And for the brief ten daysI was there, it would be mine too. As all of this realization came at once, I felt overwhelmed by the weight of what was to come. Would I be able to live in the same conditions as these people? Would I catch adisease that no longer existed in the first world, or maybe die from drinking contaminated water? Without a framing device explaining that this initial panic was an overreaction, this section just makes the author sound whiny, entitled, melodramatic, and immature. After all, this isnââ¬â¢t a a solo wilderness trek ââ¬â the authoris there with a paid guided program. Just how much mortality is typically associated with these very standard college-application-boosting service trips? In a rewrite, I would suggest including more perspective on the author's outsized and overprivileged response here. This would fit well with a new focus on the different points of view on this village the author encountered. Unearned, Clichà ©d ââ¬Å"Deep Thoughtsâ⬠But I gained something much more important. I gained the desire to make the world a better place for others. It was in a small, poverty-stricken village in Peru that I finally realized that there was more to life than just being alive. Is it really believable that this is what the author learned? There is maybe some evidence to suggest that the authorwas shaken somewhat out of a comfortable, materialistic existence. But what does ââ¬Å"there is more to life than just being aliveâ⬠even really mean? This conclusion is rather vague, and seems mostly a non sequitur. In a rewrite, the essayshould becompletely reoriented to discuss how differently others see us than we see ourselves, pivoting on the experience of being pitied by someone who you thought was pitiable. Then, the new versioncan end byon a note of being better able to understand different points of view and other peopleââ¬â¢s perspectives. It's important to include deep thoughts and insights into your essay - just make sure your narrative supports your conclusions! The Bottom Line Bad college essays have problems either with their topics or their execution. The essay is how admissions officers learn about your personality, point of view, and maturity level, so getting the topic right is a key factor in letting them see you as an aware, self-directed, open-minded applicant who is going to thrive in an environment of independence. The essay is also how admissions officers learn that you are writing at a ready-for-college level, so screwing up the execution shows that you either donââ¬â¢t know how to write, or donââ¬â¢t care enough to do it well. The main ways college essay topics go wrong is bad taste, bad judgment, and lack of self-awareness. The main ways college essays fail in their execution have to do with ignoring format, syntax, and genre expectations. Whatââ¬â¢s Next? Visual Identity Assignment Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 250 words
Visual Identity - Assignment Example And (6) how does the visual identity graphic fit with the product or service of this company or organization? The company logo is the famous logo for Apple, Inc. and is famously recognized globally by various people who have had interests in computers and its applications. The logo, representing the company Apple was first introduced to me during academic pursuit, as early as one could remember using the personal computer. Likewise, I remember that the logo was initially in rainbow-colored horizontal stripes, but using exactly the same graphic form (an apple with a bite at the right side). Currently, it is in its monochromatic form to indicate a more professionalized and sophisticated style commensurate to the image that the organization aimed to project. A little research apprised me that there was one logo prior to the famous visual representation of the company known as Newton Crest which was used only for one year in 1976 (Edible Apple, 2009). The graphic design is a perfect fit for the company as it accurately provided a visual identity: the representation of the apple with a bite, or byte that the designer, Rob Janoff, disclosed meant: ââ¬Å"the ââ¬Å"biteâ⬠in the Apple logo was originally implemented so that people would know that it represented an apple, and not a tomato. It also lent itself to a nerdy play on words (bite/byte), a fitting reference for a tech companyâ⬠(Edible Apple, 2009, par. 3). Therefore, aside from the apple image, the color selection and the bite were appropriately and effectively designed and evolved through the years to depict transformations from ââ¬Å"using a colorful logo as a means to ââ¬Å"humanizeâ⬠the companyâ⬠(Edible Apple, 2009, par. 4), into ââ¬Å"one capable of churning out sleek and cutting edge productsâ⬠(Edible Apple, 2009, par. 9). Therefore, the visual identity perfectly fit the image of the company in terms of providing opporunities for easy r ecognition and recall of the corporate name and the brand

The Zacarias Moussaoui Indictment Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 750 words
The Zacarias Moussaoui Indictment - Essay Example A watershed moment in world history, the morning of September 11th 2001 will forever be engrained in the American national psyche. From a political, social and economic perspective, the hijackings of 9/11 were unparalleled in scope and sheer devastation. In a fascinating article entitled ââ¬Å"Measuring the Effects of the September 11 Attack on New York Cityâ⬠, it was estimated that the direct cost of the attack stood at between $33 billion and $36 billion to the city of New York (Bram, Orr & Rappaport 2002). In addition to the direct economic costs associated with terrorism and the threat of further terrorism, 9/11 also had important political ramifications. The USA Patriot Act of 2001 (a contrived acronym meaning Uniting and Strengthening America by Providing Appropriate Tools Required to Intercept and Obstruct Terrorism) was established in the aftermath of September 11th to protect Americans from the threat of future terror on American soil. Controversial from the outset, th e Patriot Act represented a serious departure from established legal norms and prior American jurisprudence with respect to privacy legislation. The United States also wanted culpability for the attacks and sought out anyone, anywhere in the world, whom they could link to this disastrous attack (Chaliland 2007). While all of the hijackers that morning perished in the attacks, one alleged plotter, Zacarias Moussaoui, was arrested and faced criminal charges due to his links to the attacks of 9/11. Accordingly, Moussaoui was charged with conspiring to kill American citizens during the attacks of September 11th and was sentenced to life imprisonment. What did his indictment entail? As the alleged replacement for the 20th hijacker, during Zacarias Moussaouiââ¬â¢s conspiracy trial he initially faced the death penalty and was subject to capital punishment for his alleged crimes. Charged with conspiring with the alleged 9/11

Hiram Miller Essay Example for Free
Hiram Miller Essay I. Basic Problem The Hiram Miller Office Products Division does not have an adequate main warehouse facility to support the operations of their business. This is seen throughout the company causing problems with inventory levels, shipping/receiving, and workforce levels. Both the available space outside the warehouse and the building itself are significant problems. II. Support for the Basic Problem Insufficient dock space had more than one second order causal problem. Demurrage and redelivery charges had to be paid, lead time had to be increased by 2-4 weeks on full truck shipments, and larger inventory safety stocks were needed because there were not enough docks to accommodate the shipment load. The charges hurt the company directly with financial losses, the longer lead time meant the company had to rely on forecasting more heavily, and extra safety stock results in unnecessary usage of warehouse space. Trucks were forced to line up in the street, violating traffic rules, which had to be compensated by bribing police officers. This cost the company money and was unethical. The lack of dock space also caused outgoing shipments to be delayed because there was no room to drop a trailer which meant longer lead times for the customers. Weak floors, low ceilings, and the use of elevators created major inefficiencies within the warehouse. Not being able to use forklifts increased the amount of people needed to move merchandise and added time to the unloading/loading process. Pallets couldnââ¬â¢t be stacked with low ceilings so the space sitting inventory used up could be used for other purposes. Animosity between workers is never beneficial to a company and the presence of elevators means that people are continually fighting over who gets to use it, which caused constant battles. III. Alternate Recommendations My first recommendation is to improve the existing building on Jefferson Street by enforcing the floors to allow the use of forklifts. This would cut down on the labor force and make moving merchandise faster, but wouldnââ¬â¢t help the lack of dock space. The company could attempt to buyout land around the Carpenter Street warehouse, renovate it, and use as the main warehouse. This would provide more dock space but could be difficult if no one is willing to give up their land. The Jefferson Street warehouse could be redone to create more docking area, less warehouse square footage, and higher ceilings so that such high inventory safety stock isnââ¬â¢t necessary and merchandise could be stacked higher. This would preserve the companyââ¬â¢s current prime location but would be difficult to complete because of the heavy traffic of daily shipments. IV. Best Recommendation The best solution is to build a new warehouse on the thirty acres available. While itââ¬â¢s being constructed, the Jefferson Street warehouse could still be in full operation. There would be more space for docking, customer parking, higher ceilings, and the ability to use forklifts and rail possibly could benefit the company tremendously. V. Methods of Implementation Plans for the number of docks, employees, material handling systems, and office space would be needed. The companyââ¬â¢s budget would have to be looked at for inefficiencies with simple fixes in order to fund the project more feasibly. Analysis would be needed in order to gauge the customerââ¬â¢s reactions as well as the cost-savings benefit of becoming much more efficient.

Defining Abnormality Essay -- Papers
Defining Abnormality One way of defining abnormality is in terms of characteristics or behaviours that are statistically infrequent (the deviation from statistical norms definition). However, this does not take into account the desirability of a characteristic or behaviour. The definition also fails to recognise that in all cultures large numbers of people may engage in behaviours that constitute mental disorders. A further problem is the failure to identify how far a person must deviate before being ââ¬Ëabnormalââ¬â¢. Such decisions are difficult to make and then consequently justify. The deviation from ideal mental health definition proposes that abnormal people do not possess characteristics that mental healthy people do, or possess characteristics that mentally healthy people do not. This particular definition relies on value judgements about what constitutes ideal mental health. It is also bound by culture, era-dependent, and limited by the context in which behaviour occurs. Abnormality has also been defined as a failure to function adequately (by not achieving some sense of personal well-being and making some contribution to a larger social group). Experiencing personal distress or discomfort, causing distress to others, and behaving in an unexpected or bizarre manner are often the reasons why people come to the attention of psychologists. Many consider the failure to function adequately definition as being the most useful single approach, and the one clo... ...ly rational, and reflect accurately the unfortunate circumstances in which a person is living. Attempts to put the blame on to the patient may inhibit efforts to produce desirable behaviour. Each of the models explain the origins of abnormality in different ways. However, these models are not necessarily mutually exclusive, since each is effectively examining a different aspect of the individual. The biological model observes that learned behaviour can be maladaptive whilst the cognitive model claims that thoughts can be irrational and therefore also maladaptive. The behaviourist model states that abnormal behaviour is learnt in the same way as other types of behaviour through stimulus-response mechanisms and operant conditioning. Each of the models is subject to certain practical and ethical considerations also.
